085 Origin _ Hosea 8

Posted

Who made you? Have you forgotten you made you? The start of a life is misceous , yes we know from science that egg and sperm must come together. But who determines which sperm or egg.

In this study, the tools we would use for this study are

  1. Who, What, When, Where, and How tool
  2. What does it mean?
  3. How does it apply to me today?

So let’s dig in and turn the bible to Hosea 8

Who, What, When, Where, and How tool

Who made you? Have you forgotten you made you? The start of a life is misceous , yes we know from science that egg and sperm must come together. But who determines which sperm or egg.

Israel as a nation was formed by God many years ago when God promised Abraham but it seems Israel had forgotten its origin. The people of Israel have broken God’s covenant. They had  turned to idol worshipping. Idols which were handicraft items of people. They had chosen leaders outside the guidance  and parameters that God gave them as a nation in choosing their leaders.

However, Israel argues otherwise, stating that they acknowledge God. Though Israel could not state they had not broken the terms of their covenant with God, rather they pointed at the part of the covenant they had obeyed.

Israel picked and chose which part of God’s law they were obeying and justified their actions with the sacrifices they brought to God.

A time of judgement for the consequences of Israel’s actions was apparent.Rather than returning to God, they try to look for their own solutions outside of God

Israel had forgotten her maker so now she will experience God’s judgement.

What does (this passage ) mean?

the eagle over high has a vantage point to see the big picture. To see how the whole nation

The judgement was going to be over all the people.

Those idols that they had put their confidence in were going to be taken away.

Israel not acknowledging the situation but crying that they know God even though their action begs the fact that they actually know God.

They sow the wind, And reap the whirlwind. Israel continued actions now the repercussion for those actions is the judgment of God. They would not have crops and the nation is scattered abroad.  The judgment spread even to Judah.

But in the judgement, God also hinted at restoration when God said  “Now I will gather them”.

How does it apply to me today?

To have a knowledge of God is not the same as knowing God. We know alot about different prominent people, but can we really say we know them? While we may draw up facts about them from google and social media we don’t know these prominent people and they do not know us.

The nation of Israel knew the laws and things about God but did they really know God? It makes me ask, how do we know people? How do we know God?

To know someone, we first will know about them the knowledge but to know goes much deeper, it is the interacting with the person that facts and figures we know of them translate to really knowing them. The interactions with a person separate the knowing of them from the knowing them.

In Hosea 8, Israel knew about God ( head knowledge) but their actions show they did not know God.  For you and me, can we say we  know God or we know of God?

While the first steps to knowing may come from the head’s knowledge of the facts, it is our continued interaction with God that brings us to the place of knowing Him.

If Israel knew God, then she would not have turned to Assyria for help, rather would have repented and turned back to God.

Another lesson that stands out to me from this passage is not forgetting our origin. The origin of the human race came from God. For He created and made us all. It’s like the question asked, what comes first the chicken or the egg? While we may all come from different nuclear families we all stem from God. He chose the egg and the sperm that made us. So He who formed us should not be forgotten when we now believe we can stand on our own.

Israel as a nation was  formed by God and God gave them guidance to follow so that they can continue to prosper as a nation. This guidance was from the love God had for them. But in Israel’s success as a nation, it forgot its origin, discarded God’s guidance and came up with their own mode of operandi. Which led to their destruction and judgement.

While the human race has come a long way in knowledge and advancement it must not discard the laws and precepts of God.

Bringing it home to you and me, what are the guidance of our life and conduct. Do we channel our  lives in accordance with his word, and through Jesus Christ.
