She was kind to a stranger, who asked her for a drink. The stranger can see the well and probably fetch water for himself. But Rebecca did not point this out to the stranger rather she indulges him and gives him some water to drink.
She noticed if these people were thirst then their camels must be thirst too. She proceeded to offer water to their animals. According to the national geographic, a thirsty camel can drink as many as 30 gallons (135 liters) of water in about 13 minutes. This generous act would have taken considerable effort and time as she gave water to 10 camels.
For her kindnesses, readiness to serve others and hospitality she received unexpected gifts
Rebecca offered accommodation in her father home to Abraham’s servant
She told her family about all what Abraham’s servant the strangers had told her.
She received a marriage proposal that she accepted. Rebecca agreed to marry Isaac, with her parents’ consent.
Rebecca was ready for the adventure and proceeded to follow Abraham servant to meet and marry Issac. She was swift in her decision to obey and didn’t delay Abraham’s servant any further.
Rebecca becomes Issac’s wife.
What does it mean?
Rebecca’s kindness to a stranger turned out she was being kind and hospitable to her uncle.
Kindness and hospitality does cost resources, but Rebecca was willingly to offer assistance above what was requested of her. This would have taken Rebecca considerable time and effort. She was sure not shy of hard work, as she offered to give the camels water.
Rebecca agreed to her volition to marry Issac, and her parents did not object either. She agreed to go at once though this may not be agreeable to modern customs among us today.
I saw this quote somewhere, which explains the mutual consent of the child and the parent.
“As children ought not to marry without their parents’ consent, so parents ought not to marry them without their own consent.”
How does it apply to me today?
I have been thinking of Rebecca’s kindness. If a stranger asks for a cup of water and you give them that in itself is kindness. Rebecca’s level of kindness looked beyond what the Servant Eliasa asked and met the need he didn’t even ask for.
Always be willing to help & care for others, you never know whom God has sent in the form of an angel…in so doing it could open the door to your blessing.
Rebecca’s family had maids, but Rebecca was still required to go fetch water.
On another note it points out that irrespective of maids or servants in households children and parents should also do part of house chores.
Rebecca went to fetch water the time women came to get water from the will in her village. Rebecca was submissive to her parents to do the task of fetching water. She was trained well by her parents, she was ready to contribute to do work in her family. Every member of the family should serve in the family in one way or the other and do it with the right attitude.
Rebecca was available to serve and she did it with respect. Hard working Rebecca went the extra mile in doing her duty. The servant had 10 camels which Rebecca watered. Meaning she fetched loads and loads of buckets of water from the well. At her place of service she got a marriage proposal. We know from those who keep camels that a camel can drink 135 litres of water in 13 minutes and Rebecca watered 10 camels. That is going above the call of duty. We should be available to serve others. Learn to see the needs of others. She used her initiatives. She was not afraid of the work.
Not just doing what is in our job description but going the extra mile.
Amongst the gifts Rebcca might have received, she got a marriage proposal she accepted and with her parent’s consent. We are to notice God’s providence in the common events of human life, and in them to exercise prudence (consel) and other graces
Pray always for a discerning spirit so as to hear from God concerning all matters.
Once you have heard from God, do not delay.
God blessed Rebecca and made her part of the lineage of Christ Jesus. God promised Abraham that He would bless those who bless him. The camels that Rebecca watered belonged to Abraham.
Rebecca seems like an everyday person. God is interested in the everyday people not only until you’re a superstar or a celebrity. Rebecca was just a daughter in the house doing the household chores. She was just a regular everyday maiden. She had all these characteristics. In the mundane things we do God notices. She got water for her family when they needed it. She was hardworking and kind. She was respectful and hospitable. God notices us even when it seems obscure. And God rewards.
God sees us and recognises the service we give.
